CAD designed custom Carbon Fiber Camper

Stand out.

This 2022 GMC Hummer EV is an Edition 1 pickup that was fitted with a bed-mounted camper by EarthCruiser of Bend, Oregon, in partnership with GM. The truck was subsequently displayed at the 2023 Overland Expo Mountain West event as well as the 2024 Chicago Auto Show and won the “Best Overland Vehicle” award at the Electrify Expo show in Phoenix 2024. The carbon-fiber camper features a 605-W solar array, a 6-kWh auxiliary battery, and a CZone touchscreen control system as well as a pop-up sleep compartment, a kitchenette, and indoor and outdoor showers. The truck’s Ultium Drive e4WD system sends power to all four wheels via a single-motor front unit with an electronic locking differential as well as a dual-motor rear axle with virtual locking capability. The heated and ventilated front and heated rear seats are trimmed in Jet Black and Light Gray leather and accompanied by a 13.4” color touchscreen infotainment system and Bose surround-sound audio. Further equipment includes a 24-module 200-kWh Ultium battery pack, Super Cruise driver assistance, UltraVision underbody cameras, Watts to Freedom launch control, CrabWalk four-wheel steering, air-ride adaptive suspension, and 18″ beadlock-capable alloy wheels. Now with 13k miles, this Hummer EV Edition 1 modified by EarthCruiser is offered with camping and recovery accessories as well as a clean Arizona title.

Production of Edition 1 examples began in late 2021 at GM’s “Factory Zero” Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Center in Michigan. This example was brought to EarthCruiser in Bend, Oregon, and repainted in its current gray finish as part of the aforementioned camper build completed in 2023. The truck features an Infinity Roof with four tinted glass Sky Panels along with LED headlights, heated and power-folding mirrors, front and rear recovery hooks, and a Kicker audio system integrated into the MultiPro tailgate.

The EarthCruiser pop-up camper was developed in partnership with GM and revealed in August 2023. The bed-mounted camper body is constructed of carbon fiber and was painted to match the body of the truck. A 605-W solar array is integrated into the insulated roof, while external storage boxes on both sides provide storage space for recovery gear and other accessories. The interior features 7″ CZone touchscreen control system as well as a kitchenette including a refrigerator, a freezer, a sink, and a 1400-W induction stovetop. A 6-kWh lithium battery and 1500-W inverter have also been added, and further details include a 13.5-gallon fresh water tank, a 7.0-gallon gray water system, and internal and external showers. The freshwater system utilizes a marine filter capable of turning ANY non-salt water source into fresh, drinkable water. Park near a fresh water source (river, stream, lake, pond…) and you have an unlimited source of drinking water.

The 18″ beadlock-capable alloy wheels feature a bronze decorative ring and are mounted with 37×12.50″ BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 tires. Edition 1 equipment included the Extreme Off-Road Package, which added rocker-panel rock sliders, underbody skid plates, ball spline half shafts, and underbody cameras. The CrabWalk four-wheel steering system allows the rear wheels to turn up to 10°, enabling the truck to travel diagonally at low speeds. Additional features include regenerative braking and a four-corner air-ride suspension with adaptive dampers.

Jet Black and Light Gray leather upholstery covers the seats, while bronze trim accents the dashboard, which is also fitted with an “Edition 1” badge. The heated and ventilated front seats feature 12-way power adjustment, four-way lumbar-support control, and Hummer EV insignias, while the heated rear seats incorporate integrated storage compartments. Additional amenities include tri-zone automatic climate control, Bose surround-sound audio, the Super Cruise system, and an UltraVision system providing 18 exterior camera views including front and rear underbody cameras.

The heated steering wheel fronts a 12.3” high definition configurable digital display panel, and the infotainment system features a centrally mounted 13.4” high definition color touchscreen. A dial on the center console allows the driver to select between various drive modes, and the truck is further equipped with a Watts to Freedom launch control system. The digital odometer indicates less than13k miles.

The front “eTrunk” features a power-operated hood that opens to reveal 11.3 cubic feet of space along with an under-floor storage bin.

A single-motor front-drive unit with a 13.3:1 fixed gear ratio is housed with an electronic locking differential, while a rear-axle unit with a fixed 10.5:1 ratio incorporates two motors that can be synchronized to simulate a locking differential. The Ultium battery pack is composed of 24 pouch-style vertical cell modules in two layers and is compatible with 800-V/350-kW fast-charging stations, including Tesla, EV-Go, Chargepoint, Electrify America, and others.
